(In Fact It Could Save You A Bob Or Two with the Heat Project!)

The daily press coverage about the credit crunch and related price hikes in energy bills, fuel prices, and a turbulent housing market has triggered a worrying response amongst many, with some quoted as saying “Can we really afford to go green?” (BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine Show)

The concern is understandable. The steady increase in general living expenses has affected us all, some more so than others; National Energy Action calculates that for every 1% rise in fuel prices 40,000 are plunged into fuel poverty (where more than 10% of household income is spent on fuel bills).

Concern for those on low incomes is growing synonymous with the fuel prices, and it seems the issue of going green is the least of many households’ priorities as it is deemed as too expensive given the current financial climate.

Such attitudes are of deep concern to many environmentalists who rally to defend the issue of going green in terms of its significant climatic importance and the common misconception that going green is a ‘virtue’ only those with expendable income can afford.

In response to the question of ‘Can we really afford to go green’, top energy consultancy, Enact, is trying to re-educate homeowners of the free and heavily discounted green measures they can have easily installed in their property which not only reduce household CO2 emissions but also energy consumption, and therefore fuel bills; a win win situation!

Through the Enact managed scheme, the Heat Project, homeowners and private tenants throughout the UK have enjoyed energy savings and reduced fuel bills for over 10 years since the projects inception.
As part of a continued marketing effort since last September, over 16.7 million homes have been contacted throughout the UK via a Heat Project mailing letter promoting the free and grant assisted loft and cavity wall insulation available to all homeowners and private tenants. Those who are over 70 or in receipt of income or disability related benefits, and essentially those more likely to be deemed as fuel poor, are entitled to the insulation works being installed for free.

According to National Energy Action since 2003 domestic gas charges have increased by more than 85% and charges for electricity in excess of 65%. With a potential saving of over £200 on the average fuel bill through the simple installation of loft and cavity wall insulation, the free and grant assisted insulation available through grant providers like the Heat Project is just one of the many ways households can go green at an affordable or even free price.
